Minutes of November 1, 2018 Meeting

Prior to the meeting, a traditional Birthday Cake Cutting Ceremony was held – Bill Shaw was the oldest Marine and Cmdt Cody Dumont was the youngest Marine present. Gen Lejeune’s and the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ birthday messages were read.

Opening Ceremony: Sgt/Arms Bill Kiernan opened the meeting at 1900 and opening prayer was given by Chaplain Mike Harnish.  14 Detachment Members and six guests were present.

Roll Call of Officers: Sr Vice Cmdt Standafer, Jr Vice Mark Lindsley, and Sgt at Arms Bill Kiernan were excused.  All other officers were present.

Applications for Membership: Karen Barilani and Charlie Frey were voted in, pending verification of their DD 214.  Karen was not present. Charlie was duly sworn in.

Minutes from Previous Meeting – 10/4/18 Minutes: Minutes were distributed and reviewed by the membership.  Motion made to accept the minutes as presented by Judge Advocate LaClair, seconded by Bob Selig; there was no discussion; motion passed unanimously. 

Correspondence:  Adj Westover briefed emails from the Dept NH Cmdt onthe upcoming Birthday Balls, Joint Installation Dinner, Quad State Convention and the Manchester Brigade Luncheon.

Request from the Cmdt Dept of Florida for assistance for members for relief from recent hurricanes.  After discussion of a donation and an appropriate amount, LaClair made a motion made to donate $500, seconded by Dave Winters.  There was no discussion; motion passed.

Thank you letter from Joe Shea’s daughter, Cindy, on the quilt the Detachment gave her.

Paymaster Report: Report was distributed and reviewed.  Adj/Paymaster Westover briefed the report.  Motion made to accept the report as presented by LaClair, duly seconded by Chaplain Mike Harnish.  There was no discussion; motion passed.

The following reimbursement requests were discussed:

-Reimbursement for flowers sent to Bill Kiernan, who is in the hospital.  Commandant purchased them as authorized per the Detachment Bylaws without the need for a motion or approval of the Membership.

Sick and In Distress: As just mentioned, Kiernan is in the hospital; Adj Westover’s Father-in-Law (WWII & Korean War Vet) passed away.

  • Recruiting Dinner at locations outside Concord area: Members encouraged to contact the Cmdt with restaurant ideas.

Upcoming Events:

Nov 5 (Sun) Manchester Marathon – Route Marshalls – Dept of NH Members earn $500.

Nov 10 (Sat) 7:30 AM @ State House for Flag Raising – Chap Harnish will bring the Det Colors; all others are invited to attend.  Breakfast at the Windmill restaurant immediately following the ceremony.

Nov 17 (Sat) 8:30 AM Concord Holiday Parade – T4T themed Float – Color Guard: Dumont, Harnish, Westover, and new member, Karen. Float: Pulled by LaClair, candy distribution by Poolees.  There will also be a cookout for the Poolee function, which is one of the recruiter’s last event.  Volunteers needed to assist the “Silent Grill Team”.

Nov 25 (Sun) 10:30 AM: Breakfast Social at Appleseed restaurant in Bradford – All are encouraged to attend this strictly social event.  Rides available upon request.

Recent Events – after action reports:

Oct 21: Breakfast Social at Appleseed restaurant in Bradford.– Members met and enjoyed good food and even better company.

AR-15A2 Fundraiser Committee – Status Report: Drawing Event for Nov 10th was discussed.  Chuck Houston will provide a wheel to draw the ticket from.  Drawing will be conducted after the Flag Raising Ceremony.

Unfinished Business

-Trailer / Float modifications: The trailer will be decorated for the Concord Parade at Westover’s house the evening of Nov 16th.  Modifications will be made to the storage part of the trailer in the spring.

-Marines Fighting Hunger food drive: grocery store suggestions were provided to the Cmdt.  He will make contact with them for permission to collect food at their locations to donate to a local food pantry.

-Dues for 2019: More dues were collected before the meeting. Those that are due can pay by cash, check, and now charge card.

-Toys for Tots: All members are encouraged to participate in some way.  Westover will be the Detachment contact for more information.

New Business:

Detachment Officer Nominations & Elections: There were no further nominations. The following were voted in as one slate/single vote; Motion by Westover, second by LaClair and all voting in favor of these Officers – Cmdt: Cody Dumont, Sr Vice Cmdt: Mark Lindsley, Jr Vice Cmdt: David Winters, Judge Advocate: Reggie LaClair.  Term will take effect in January.

Good of the League:  

Awards: Comdt gave out the following awards in recognition of service during the past year:

Carol McLaren (Delbridge): Meritorious Commendation.

Mike Harnish, Sunny Ashburn, Bryan Westover: Distinguished Service Award.

David Winters: Det Marine of the Year

Next Month’s Meal-12/6: Carol & Donna will provide the meal and dessert.

Closing Ceremony conducted; next meeting December 6, 2018.  The meeting closed at 1950.
