Minutes of June 7, 2018 Meeting

Opening Ceremony: Acting Sgt/Arms Chuck Houston opened the meeting at 1851 and opening prayer was given by Chaplain Mike Harnish.  15 Detachment Members, 1 prospective member (Norman “Sunny” Ashburn) and 1 visiting Leaguer (Paul Janes) were present.

Roll Call of Officers: Sr Vice Cmdt Standafer and Sgt/Arms Bill Kiernan was excused.  All other officers were present.

Applications for Membership: Sunny Ashburn and Paul Janes introduced themselves and were welcomed.

Minutes from Previous Meeting – 5/3/18 Minutes: Minutes were distributed and reviewed by the membership.  Motion made to accept the minutes as presented by Liz Shaw, seconded by Bob Selig; there was no discussion; motion passed unanimously. 

Correspondence:  Adj Westover briefed the various emails on events received from the Dept Cmdt; thank you cards from the Shaw family including a $1,000 donation in memory of “Betty” Shaw – mother of Liz and husband of Bill (both Dillon Det Members); and The Winnacunnet H.S. Marine JROTC unit explaining their fundraiser to send two local Special Olympic athletes to the National Games in Seattle, WA at a cost of $4,000.  The JROTC students have volunteered over 700 hours to Special Olympic events.  Motion made to donate $100 to help defray their cost by Mark Lindsley, seconded by Liz Shaw; there was no discussion; motion passed unanimously. 

Paymaster Report: Report was distributed and reviewed.  Adj/Paymaster Westover briefed the report.  Motion made to accept the report as presented by Liz Shaw, duly seconded by Lindsley.  There was no discussion; motion passed.

The following reimbursement requests were discussed:

-Cmdt Cody Dumont to be reimbursed for the Quad State Convention fee and room costs totaling $112.90.  Motion made to reimburse Cmdt Dumont $112.90 by Selig, seconded by Liz Shaw; there was no discussion; motion passed unanimously.  Cmdt Dumont directed that the reimbursement be donated to the Poolee Event Fund.

-Cmdt Cody Dumont to be reimbursed for the Officer Cover Emblem (EGA) and express shipping for Joe Shea’s memorial service (which was not used, so will be held for a future service) at a cost of $53.04.  Motion made to reimburse Cmdt Dumont $53.04 by Westover, seconded by Harnish; there was no discussion; motion passed unanimously.  Cmdt Dumont directed that the reimbursement be donated to the Poolee Event Fund.

-Chuck Houston purchased 10 American Flags and 10 USMC for monuments in the area or other appropriate uses.  2 of each were used for the two Marine monuments in Concord.  Chuck would not accept reimbursement and gave them as a donation.  He was thanked for the donation and putting out the flags at the monuments.

-Adj/Paymaster Westover rented the dunk tank on his credit card for the upcoming Concord Market Days at a cost of $260 (less a $50 security deposit).  He’ll submit next meeting for $210 when the security deposit is returned.

Sick and In Distress: Westover reported that Ray De Corse fell a few weeks ago and broke some ribs and his “mobility is curtailed”, as Ray put it, and may not be able to attend future meetings.  All wished him well and Westover will stay in touch with him and keep him up to date on Detachment activities.

Report of Officers. Quartermaster report: League items inventory will be held Sat. June 9th from 9 to 11 AM in the PARKING LOT at the Bow Old Town Hall to evaluate and inventory all the MCL gear and to put into storage.

  • Recruiting Dinner at locations outside Concord area: Members that live outside the Concord area are to look for restaurants and report back to the Cmdt with info – PLEASE.

Upcoming Events:

June 10 (Sun) 10:00 AM – Monthly Breakfast Social at Appleseed restaurant in Bradford. This will be purely a social event to get to know each other more and build camaraderie. –

June 21-23 (Thurs – Sat) – Concord Days Booth & Dunk Tank, Main St, Concord. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED, especially for Saturday.  This is our big fundraiser for year – please support this.

June 24 (Sun) – Dept of NH Meeting (11 AM) & Growl (2 PM) @ American Legion, 7

Perley St, Concord. All are welcome and encouraged to attend the Dept Meeting.

June 30 (Sat) 4:00 PM – Bradford Independence Day Parade (float and possible color guard).

July 4 (Wed) 12 Noon – Andover Parade & Old Home Day (booth and color guard)

July 14 (Sat) – Pittsfield Old Home Day (parade and booth)

Aug 2 (Thurs) – Dillon Det Cookout at the Veterans Home in Tilton – Fundraiser for the

Veterans Home (No Aug meeting) – Cmdt will provide more info at the July meeting.

Aug 11 (Sat) – Poolee Family Picnic – Cmdt will provide more info at the July meeting.

Aug 18 (Sat) – Dunbarton Old Home Day

Additional Events:

– Poolee Family Picnic will be Aug 11th (Sat) – Big Event: ~120 Poolees and their parents.  Some Members volunteered to research locations and get back to the Cmdt ASAP.  Funding for this was previously approved.  Member participation will be essential for this to be a success – food, games, logistics, etc.

Recent Events – after action reports:

-May 12 & 19 – Set out flags in Concord & Bow: No report on Concord. Westover reported that the Bow’s went well. He supervised – flags were set out by local scouts and their parents

-May 20 – Breakfast Social at Appleseed restaurant in Bradford – good turnout, good time.

-May 28 – Concord Memorial Day Parade: many Members participated with the float pulled by Bill Kiernan; Color Guard Members: Michael Standafer, Michael Harnish, Cody Dumont, Steve Opett.

-May 28 – Bow Memorial Day Ceremony: went well – Firing Detail:  Michael Harnish, Cody Dumont, Mark Lindsley, and Reggie LaClair.

 

AR-15A2 Fundraiser Committee – Status Report given by Lindsley: No change since last month. Next gun show is Sep 8-9. Cmdt would like a spaghetti dinner or something like it when the winning ticket drawing is done Nov 10th.  Cmdt is looking for ideas – any suggestions?

Unfinished Business

-Detachment Shirts: Cmdt’s shirt order came in. Shirts are available for $33 each.  Some were sold at the meeting, many still available for sale.

-Ride Sharing Offer: Adj Westover notified the membership via email prior to the past two meetings that rides are available for those that need them.  No requests received.

-Trailer / Float preparation – Status Report: Cmdt briefed that Steve Opett is upgrading the trailer to include storage within the trailer, lights, and possibly replace the tires.  Opett will submit for reimbursement of materials when completed.

-Replace the USMC and American Flags at the 2 monuments in Concord: previously discussed.

-Marines Fighting Hunger food drive: Cmdt restated his idea to collect food at different grocery stores to provide food to various food banks and soup kitchens.  This would be done for a few hours on a Sat or Sun afternoon. Cmdt asked members to provide suggestions for locations

New Business: None.

Good of the League

-Awards: Cmdt presented Chuck Houston with his MCL Membership pin.

-Next Month’s Meeting & Meal – 6/7/18: Donna Melanson offered to bring the meal and Liz Shaw will provide dessert.  Thanks was given to Reggie LaClair for the great lasagna meal and for donating all the money collected ($38) to the Detachment!

Closing Ceremony conducted; next meeting July 5, 2018.  The meeting closed at 1950.
