Minutes of April 5, 2018 Meeting

Opening Ceremony: Sgt/Arms Bill Kiernan opened the meeting at 1902 and opening prayer was given by Chaplain Mike Harnish.  13 Detachment Members, two guests, and one prospective member were present.

Roll Call of Officers: Sr Vice Cmdt Standafer was absent.  All other officers were present.

Applications for Membership: Judge Advocate LaClair sponsored a prospective member, Charles “Chuck” Houston.  Chuck attended our last meeting and would like to join. Chuck was voted in by unanimous vote and was sworn in by Cmdt Cody Dumont and Adjutant Bryan Westover.

Minutes from Previous Meeting – 2/1/18 Minutes (No Meeting in March): Minutes were distributed and reviewed by the membership.  Motion made to accept the minutes as presented by Kiernan, seconded by Bob Selig; there was no discussion; motion passed unanimously. 

Correspondence:  Adj Westover briefed the various emails on events received from the Dept Cmdt and others.

There was also a request from the Dept Cmdt to vote on a location for the 2019 Quad State Convention due to price change since the Dept Meeting held last month. After review of the proposals and a brief discussion, the vote was 7 for Portsmouth and 2 for Manchester.

Paymaster Report: Report was distributed and reviewed.  Adj/Paymaster Westover briefed the report.  Motion made to accept the report as presented by Kiernan, duly seconded by Judge Adv Reggie LaClair.  There was no discussion; motion passed.

The following reimbursement requests were discussed:

-$50 for stamps to Chaplain Harnish. Motion to approve the $50 reimbursement by LeClair, seconded by Selig.  There was no discussion; motion passed.

-$35 for a new Member MCL cover & EGA to Cmdt Dumont. Motion to approve the $35 reimbursement by LeClair, seconded by Lindsley.  There was no discussion; motion passed.

-$15 for a storage totes for organizing our meeting items stored at the Old Town Hall to Sgt/Arms Kiernan. Motion to approve the $15 reimbursement by LaClair, seconded by Lindsley.  There was no discussion; motion passed.

Sick and In Distress: John Finck briefed Joe Shea’s medical status – pending surgery, but spirits are up.  Dave Winters and others offered assistance to our Members in need due to sick/distressed.  Bob Selig stated that Bill Shaw’s wife/Liz Shaw’s mother is in hospice and will get more information and report back to the Cmdt ASAP.  Cmdt gave kudos to LaClair for his assistance in a snow storm to take care of the Cmdt’s driveway while the Cmdt was out of state.

Report of Officers

– Quartermaster report: Bill Kiernan would like to schedule a Saturday at the end of May to have any Member with any Det owned item to bring it to the Old Town Hall to be documented, sorted and stored or disposed of, if necessary.  Item to be placed on the May Agenda.

Activity Committee:

Pending Activities:

  • Monthly Breakfast Social: Starting in May, Members and their friends and families are invited to meet for breakfast at the Appleseed restaurant in Bradford on the third Sunday of every month at 10:30 AM. This will be purely a social event to get to know each other more and build camaraderie. Next breakfast will be Sunday, May 20th.
  • Poolee Picnic: Cmdt briefed that the new recruiter in Concord will be providing the Cmdt with info monthly on their event and would like to do a picnic again this year.  More info to come.
  • Recruiting Dinner at locations outside Concord area: Tabled.

Upcoming Events: Cmdt briefly described the events on the agenda that we have scheduled this coming year.  He proposed that instead of voting on each and every expenditure, e.g. parade fee, table fee, dunk booth, food, equipment, etc. for each event separately that a single motion be made to fund all of these events.  Cmdt estimated that they should not cost more than $1,300.  Motion to approve the spending of $1,300 for the events listed on the agenda was made by Kiernan, seconded by LaClair.  Paymaster Westover stated that he will track all expenditures and will include a spreadsheet of such with the monthly paymaster report.  There was no further discussion; motion passed unanimously.

-April 7, Sat, 10 AM – POW Recognition Day at Boscawen Veterans’ Cemetery: all are invited to attend as guests, recommend wearing MCL uniform or cover.

-April 14, Sat 9 AM to 5 PM & April 15, Sun 9 AM to 2 PM – Concord Gun Show @ Everett Ice Arena: Volunteers are needed both days to sell the AR-15 raffle tickets and be there to advertise the MCL and hopefully recruit new member.

-April 20 – 22 (Fri-Sun) – 2018 Quad State Convention in Burlington, VT: Dept Cmdt asked for a list of those attending. Dumont, Westover, Finck, Lindley, Melanson, Carol McLaren, and LaClair plan to attend the Convention. Dumont, Westover, Finck, Lindley, and possibly LaClair plan to attend the Growl.

-May (Around 3rd Sat), 8 AM – Set out flags at Concord’ Blossom Hill Cemetery: Info forthcoming.

-May 19, Sat, 9 AM – Set out flags at Bow Cemeteries: Westover will attend, others welcome.

-May 20 (Sun) – Spring Fling – social event put on by Granite State Det: Open to all.

-May – Replace the USMC and American Flags at the two monuments in Concord (Across street from Abbot-Downing School on South St, and Across the street from the VFW on Court St):Dillon Det to take action. Tabled to May meeting.

-May (Date/Time?)  – Set out Wreaths at Boscawen Veterans’ Cemetery: Info forthcoming.

-May 28, Mon, 8:30 AM Concord Memorial Day Parade (@ Storrs St) then Ceremony at the State House, then Lay wreaths at various Concord locations: Det to provide float in parade – discuss further at May’s meeting.

-May 28, Mon, 3:30 PM –Bow Memorial Day Ceremony: Rifle Detail, Info table: Det will provide a Rifle Detail – 4 to 5 members.

-May 30, Wed, 11 AM – Memorial Day Ceremony at Boscawen Veterans’ Cemetery.  MCL is not in charge this year, but are welcome to attend.

-June 21-23 (Thurs – Sat) – Concord Days / Dunk Tank (Main St, Concord).  Last year we raised ~$1,200, mostly from the dunk tank.  USMC recruiters may join us at the tent and possibly the dunk tank as well.

-June 24 (Sun) – Department of NH Meeting (1100) & Growl (1400) @ Concord American Legion.

-July 4, Wed, Andover Parade.

-July 14, Sat, Newbury Old Home Day (parade).

-July 14, Sat, Pittsfield Old Home Day (parade and booth).

-August 11, Sat – Loudon Old Home Day (parade & booth).

-August 18, Sat – Dunbarton Old Home Day

-September 27, 28, 29, 30 (Thurs – Sun) – Deerfield Fair

 

AR-15A2 Fundraiser Committee – Status Report: Lindsey briefed that there were no events or ticket sales since the last meeting.  He will look into getting a table at the Bektash Shrine Center Gun and Knife Show in Concord on Aug 25th.

Unfinished Business

-Detachment Shirts: Cmdt will order a shirt for De Corse (small) and Houston (XXL).

-Ride Sharing Offer: Adj Westover will notify the membership prior to all future meetings that rides may be available for those that need them.

-Trailer / Float preparation – Status Report: Westover reported that the trailer is registered and at his house. Float to be worked on after the Quad State Convention. Table to May agenda.

New Business

Appoint a Past Commandant as a Trustee: There is currently a vacancy on the Board of Trustees for the Past Cmdt position. Any Past Cmdt is eligible. Past Commandants present were asked if interested. Bob Selig stated that he would be willing to serve. By a unanimous vote, Bob Selig was elected to serve as the Past Commandant on the Board of Trustees.

 

Good of the League

-Awards: Dave Winters was presented with his MCL Membership pin.

-Next Month’s Meeting & Meal – 5/3/18: Kiernan offered to bring the meal and Emily Roy will provide dessert.  Thanks was given to Winters for a wonderful meal, including dessert.

Closing Ceremony conducted; next meeting May 3, 2018.  The meeting closed at 2007.
