Minutes of November 2, 2017 Meeting

Prior to the meeting, a traditional Birthday Cake Cutting Ceremony was held – Cmdt Cody Dumont cut the cake, Bill Shaw was the oldest Marine and Mike Standafer was the youngest Marine present. Adjutant/Paymaster Bryan Westover read Gen Lejeune’s, the USMC Commandant’s and the MCL Commandant’s birthday messages.

  • Opening Ceremony: Sgt/Arms Bill Kiernan opened the meeting at 1911 and opening prayer was given by Chaplain Mike Harnish. 19 Detachment Members present and one prospect.
  • Roll Call of Officers: Jr Vice Steve Opett was excused. All other officers were present.
  • Applications for Membership: Member Bob Selig nominated his daughter, Emily Roy, as an Associate Member. After discussion and a unanimous vote by show of hands, Ms. Roy was accepted as an Associate Member.  Cmdt Dumont administered the oath of membership.
  • Minutes from Previous Meeting – 10/5/17 Minutes: Minutes were distributed and reviewed by the membership. Motion made to accept the minutes as presented by Judge Advocate Liz Shaw, duly seconded by Reggie LaClair; there was no discussion; motion passed unanimously. 
  • Correspondence:
    1. Dept of NH Cmdt E-mails: events from the emails are listed under Announcements on the Agenda.
    2. Info from 10/29/17 Dept of NH Meeting: Cmdt briefed A) New Transmittal Forms are to be used. B) Det to take action on the Membership List/Delinquent List. C) Fundraiser for the Dept of NH: Manchester marathon volunteers needed for November 12th. If we get 10 volunteers, the Dept receives $500. Volunteers to contact the Cmdt. D) The Dept has requested donations to their General Fund as their funds are running low and fundraising has not been successful. After a lengthy discussion of what the Dept expenses are and how funds are raised, LaClair made a motion to donate $200 to the Dept of NH General Fund, duly seconded by Chaplain Harnish. Further discussion consisted of the Detachment’s fund balance; motion passed by majority vote, with one Member opposed. E) To encourage participation in Dept events, Members will be given a raffle ticket at each event they participate in for a drawing of prizes at a later date.
  • Paymaster Report: Report was distributed and reviewed. Adj/Paymaster Westover briefed the report.  Motion made to accept the report as presented by Sgt/Arms Kiernan, duly seconded by Judge Adv Shaw; there was no discussion; motion passed
  • Sick and In Distress: Westover reported that Ray DeCorse is not getting around to well, but in good spirits. Liz Shaw’s mother has cancer and is currently in Concord Hospital.
  • Report of Officers: Westover reported on an Eagle Scout Ceremony on 10/28/17 in which he presented the award to a Scout who organized the cleaning of headstones and documented of all the graves at a Bow cemetery.
  • Report of Committees
    1. Activity Committee
      1. Scheduled and Pending Events: The below items were discussed:
        • TBD Poolee Function/Cookout: Cmdt invited Poolees and prospective Members for tonight’s Birthday ceremony and meeting. Unfortunately, none attended. Hopefully future events will be more successful.
        • TBD – Uno’s Pizza Fund raising: Not discussed.
      2. Other Events and Activities
        • TBD Recruiting Dinner at locations outside Concord area. Not discussed.
        • Attend future Poolee Meetings, Thursdays at 5:00 PM, Marine Recruiting Office, Loudon Rd, Concord – Invitation is always open to us to attend.
      3. AR-15A2 Fundraiser Committee – Status Report –Lindsey reported that ticket sales are slow right now – another $80 was collected. Drawing is not until November of 2018.
  • Unfinished Business
    1. Detachment Shirts (Undelivered shirts): Cmdt has been unable to reach the contact at the company to check on Bud Durling’s medium-sized shirt, which is already paid for but hasn’t received.
    2. Repair (welding) of trailer for the Iwo Jima float – Status Report: Sr Vice Standafer stated that expects to have the welding finished by next weekend. LaClair offered to donate lights, if needed.  An inspection will be required and Westover agreed to have it registered under his name, subject to reimbursement by the Detachment.
    3. Toys for Tots box distribution and flyers. Westover briefed drop off locations for collected toys and encourage members to participate as they are able.
    4. Membership Roster: Cmdt distributed a roster of “active” Members. Members asked to provide corrections. Some Members asked for complete roster of all Det Members.
    5. Detachment Members Annual Dues Reminders: Discussed earlier. Annual dues are $32 – all Members’ dues now expire every September.
    6. Dept of NH Scuttlebutt newsletter is now the Dept’s meeting agenda. Cmdt Dumont will forward future issues to all Det Members.
  • New Business
    1. Quad State Program Ad Design (1/2 page B&W): Cmdt and Westover will take for action.
    2. Detachment Rifle Inspections: Lindsley reported that all rifles have been inspected.
    3. Detachment Officer Elections and Appointments:

– the following nominations for elected positions were previously made: Cmdt-Cody Dumont; Sr Vice Cmdt-Michael Standafer; Jr Vice Cmdt- Mark Lindsley; (Judge Advocate-none);

– the following nominations for appointed positions were previously made Chaplain-Michael Harnish; Sgt-At-Arms-Bill Kiernan; Adjutant/Paymaster-Bryan Westover.

Reggie LaClair was nominated, and duly seconded, for Judge Advocate.

Due to no further nominations, and no contested positions, LaClair made the motion, seconded by Kiernan, for a single slate vote to elect: Cmdt-Cody Dumont; Sr Vice Cmdt-Michael Standafer; Jr Vice Cmdt-Mark Lindsley; Judge Advocate-Reggie LaClair; and appoint Chaplain-Michael Harnish; Sgt-At-Arms-Bill Kiernan; Adjutant/Paymaster-Bryan Westover. There was no further discussion; motion passed unanimously. Elected and Appointed Officers were encouraged to attend the Joint Installation next month.

  • Good of the League
    1. Awards: Cmdt Dumont issued the following awards:

-Distinguished Service Award-Bronze to Robert Selig, William Shaw, and John Finck as the “character” of the Det.

– Distinguished Service Award-Bronze to Mark Lindsley as a mentor and Past Cmdt

– Distinguished Service Award-Bronze and Community Service Ribbon to Bryan Westover for his work as Adjutant/paymaster and civic works.

– Personal Meritorious Commendation to Liz Shaw, Mike Standafer, and Reggie LaClair for participation in numerous events and assisting the Cmdt.

– Meritorious Service and Community Service Award to Donna Melanson and Carol McLaren for the numerous fairs, events, and community service.

– Detachment Marine of the Year Medal to Mike Harnish for his role as Chaplain, commitment to assisting Members, the Cmdt, and his community, plus his participation in numerous events.

– Elected and Appointed Officers were also presented the appropriate medal.

– Cmdt Dumont was presented with his Life Membership Gold Card.

  1. Next Month’s Meal-12/7/17: Donna Melanson, Carol McLaren, and Linda Banfill will bring the meal and dessert.  Kiernan was thanked for a great Birthday meal of SOS and Westover’s wife was thanked for the Birthday cake.

    • 2018 Quad State Convention in Burlington, VT, April 20th-22nd, 2018

Additional Items:

-USMC Band performance at Concord High School was a great event.

-After some persuasion to provide the receipts and not to pay for items out of his own pocket,  LaClair made a motion to reimburse Cmdt Dumont $280.94 for expenses for all the awards, medals, ribbons, certificates, etc., that were presented this evening, duly seconded by Lindsley. There was no further discussion; motion passed unanimously.

  • Closing Ceremony conducted; next meeting December 7, 2017. The meeting closed at 2022.
