Minutes of September 7, 2017 Meeting

  • Opening Ceremony: Sgt/Arms Bill Kiernan opened the meeting at 1835 and opening prayer was given by Chaplain Mike Harnish. There were 14 Detachment Members present.
  • Roll Call of Officers: Jr Vice Steve Opett was absent. All other officers were present.
  • Applications for Membership: None at this time.
  • Minutes from Previous Meeting -8/3/17 Minutes: Minutes were distributed and reviewed by the membership. Motion made to accept the minutes as presented by Judge Advocate Liz Shaw, duly seconded by Kiernan; there was a correction made; motion passed unanimously to accept the minutes as edited. 
  • Correspondence:
    1. Dept of NH Cmdt E-mails: discussed A) Sep 10th 100 Nights of Remembrance, Boscawen Cemetery: Cmdt Dumont, Sr Vice Mike Standafer and Reggie LaClair volunteered for rifle detail. B) Sept 28th Stand Down for Homeless Veterans, Nashua C) Sept 16th Manchester VA Medical Center Car Show. D) Oct 5th – 8th Vietnam Moving Wall at the UNH campus.
    2. Thank you letter from Frank Diekmann re: our Dreams for Marines donation.
    3. Request for new Marine Corps flag for across the street from Concord VFW: Donna Melanson volunteered to place American flags and USMC flags at the monuments across from the VFW and across from the Abbot-Downing School. Linda Banfill will donate the USMC flags and Bryan Westover will donate the American flags.
  • Paymaster Report: Report was distributed and reviewed. Adj/Paymaster Bryan Westover briefed the report.  Motion made to accept the report as presented by Kiernan, duly seconded by Bob Selig; no discussion; motion passed Cmdt Dumont announced that he received another anonymous donation of $100 for future Poolee functions.
  • Sick and In Distress:
  1. a) Marines in Houston – National MCL Disaster Relief fund: after much discussion there was a motion made to donate $200 to the Disaster Relief Fund by Kiernan, duly seconded by LaClair; no further discussion; motion passed by majority vote.
  2. b) Cmdt Dumont has a family friend he is sending supplies, their home and total loss at this point from the recent hurricane and is personally sending them requested items.
  3. c) Westover reported on Joe Shea’s and Jack Hachez’s current status – the Det wishes them both well.
  • Report of Officers:
  • a) Installation of Jr Vice Cmdt – Tabled.
  • b) Recent events:
  • i) August 12, Sat – Loudon Old Home Day Parade: Color Guard Members: Dumont, LaClair, Mike Harnish, Westover – special appreciation for Reggie LaClair for participating while injured – Color Guard was awarded a Trophy and the Cmdt will present it to LaClair for his grit and dedication. Bill and Mrs. Kiernan prepared and drove the Iwo Jima float.  Thanks also to all that manned the tent at the Old Home Days event.
  • ii) August 19, Sat – Poolee Family Event – Elm Brook Park: Unfortunately due to mis-scheduling by the Recruiting office, there was a low turnout of Poolees. Only two prospective members attended. However, there was lots of fun and food for Members and their families that attended.  Leftover food that could be saved (meats, buns, drinks, etc.) will be saved for future Poolee functions.

    1. Activity Committee
      1. Scheduled and Pending Events: The below items were discussed:
        • Sept 9 & 10 – Everett Arena Gun Show, Loudon Rd, Concord. Volunteers needed for our table for AR-15 Rifle Raffle and recruiting: Sep 9th – Lindsley, Dumont, LaClair volunteered. Sep 10th – Lindsley, Dumont, Westover volunteered; All others welcomed. Motion made to reimburse any Member volunteering for the entrance fee, should they be charged by Lindsley, duly seconded by LaClair; no discussion; motion passed unanimously
        • Sept 10 – Marine Monument for Cadets
          • Marine(s) to man the U S Marine Corps Monument at the NHSVC from 2:00 to 4:00 on Sunday the 10th of September, as part of our 2017 Youth Training Day: Bob Selig and Bill Shaw volunteered
          • Rifle Detail on Sept 10: (discussed above)
        • (TBD) Poolee Function/Cookout – Cmdt stated that our plan is to support future big events.
        • TBD – Uno’s Pizza Fund raising. Not discussed.
      2. Other Events and Activities
        • Recruiting Dinner at locations TBD, outside Concord area. Not discussed.
        • Attend future Poolee Meetings, Thursdays at 5:00 PM, Marine Recruiting Office, Loudon Rd, Concord – Invitation is always open to us to attend.
      3. AR-15A2 Fundraiser Committee – Status Report –Lindsley reported that approximately 47 of the 500 tickets have been sold so far; rules of raffle flyer is given to each ticket purchaser. Motion made to reimburse Cmdt Dumont for the $25 cost of printing of the rules flyers by Lindsley, duly seconded by LaClair; no discussion; motion passed
  • Unfinished Business
  • Detachment Shirts: Costs are: S-XL $31.50, XXL $33.75, 3X-4X $36.25. Standafer paid for his shirt and gave a little extra to the Detachment.
  • Repair (welding) of trailer for the Iwo Jima float – Status Report: Opett to solicit businesses to donate steel for the repairs. Opett and Standafer will work on repairs together.  Liz Shaw offered her husband’s assistance, if needed.
  • New Business
    1. Any proposed Detachment Bylaw changes to be submitted in writing to Board of Trustees prior to the October meeting. Adj/Paymaster to email current Bylaws to all Members for their review.
    2. 2019 Quad State Convention Location Proposal and Selection Committee: One-time committee meeting to be held at 1000, Sep 24th just prior to the Dept NH meeting.  Committee Members requested – contact Det or Dept Cmdt if interested.
  • Good of the League
    1. Mike Standafer to make next month’s (October 5th) meal and Lindsley to bring dessert. Members thanked Reggie LaClair and his wife for a wonderful lasagna meal.
    2. Linda Banfill made and purchased gifts for 2 Marines that recently graduated boot camp. Chaplain will bless them and the Detachment thanked her for her generosity.
    3. Cmdt Dumont was awarded his Life Member Pin.
  • Announcements
    1. 100 Nights of Remembrance – September 10, 2017 (Sunday) Ceremony at 6 PM
    2. Department of NH Meeting (1100) & Growl (1400) – September 24, 2017 @ American Legion, Concord
    3. Bill Shaw stated his displeasure with National MCL’s recent procedural change on dues and their lack of responding to his letter. He further announced that he has to ill feelings with our Detachment, but he will resign from the MCL Sept 30th.
