Minutes of July 6, 2017 Meeting

  • Opening Ceremony: Sgt/Arms Bill Kiernan opened the meeting at 1855 and opening prayer was given by Chaplain Mike Harnish. There were 15 Detachment Members present.  The Dept of NH Cmdt Cherie Monnell and Miss NH Brianna Hayward were present as well.
  • Roll Call of Officers: Jr Vice Steve Opett was excused. All other officers were present.
  • Applications for Membership: 15 names have been collected from past events and have been invited to our August picnic.
  • Minutes from Previous Meeting – 6/1/17 Minutes: Minutes were distributed and reviewed by the membership. Motion made to accept the minutes as presented by Kiernan, duly seconded by Reggie LaClair; there was no discussion; motion passed
  • Correspondence: 1) Email from Dept of NH soliciting NH locations for the 2019 Quad State Convention.  2) Korean War Vet Ceremony on July 28th at the NH Vet Cemetery.
  • Paymaster Report: Report was distributed and reviewed. Adj/Paymaster Bryan Westover briefed the report.  Motion made to accept the report as presented by Kiernan, duly seconded by Judge Advocate Liz Shaw; Discussion consisted of having one Member control the cash box at events and another $100 anonymous donation made for the Poolee Function; motion passed
  • Sick and In Distress: Bud Durling’s sister passed away – Det offered flowers and our prayers.
  • Report of Officers:

a) Installation of Jr Vice Cmdt – Tabled.

b) Recent events:

i) Fred Osgood’s funeral – Participated: Firing Detail Members: Mark Lindsley, Bud Durling, Reggie LaClair, Michael Harnish. Taps: Joseph Shea

ii) Louis Faucher funeral, Boscawen 6/19/17 – Participated: Firing Detail Members: Mark Lindsley, Bud Durling, Reggie LaClair, Cody Dumont

iii)        Carl Wyss, Jr. funeral, Boscawen 6/19/17 – Who participated Firing Detail Members: Mark Lindsley, Bud Durling, Reggie LaClair, Cody Dumont

iv) Concord Market Days – Overall profit $500, they would like us to come back next year for all 3 days [would need more volunteers, especially in the tank].

(1)       Dunk Tank – Dumont and Westover were thanked for their time getting dunked.  Costs for rental were recovered and was well attended by the crowd.

(2)       T-Shirt sales – went well, no risk, made profit.

(3)       Pin Sales – some sales, a couple were given to kids that went 3 for 3 at the dunk tank.

v) July 4th Andover Parade – Participated: Color Guard Members: Steve Opett, Michael Harnish, Cody Dumont, Michael Standafer. Jr Vice Cmdt Opett was commended for saving the day with truck for the float and last minute Color Guard member. Motion made to send in the $35 tent/space fee by Bob Selig, duly seconded by Reggie LaClair; there was no discussion; motion passed

    1. Activity Committee
      1. Scheduled and Pending Events: The below items were discussed:
        • July 8, Sat – Newbury Old Home Day (booth). Set up at 8AM, Event from 10-3.
        • July 22, Sat – Pittsfield Old Home Day (parade and booth). Cmdt will send email on event details.
        • August 12, Sat – Loudon Old Home Day (parade @ 10AM & booth)
        • August 19, Sat – Poolee Family Event – Elm Brook Park (Site #4) ***All Hands On Deck*** This is our big event for the year – Poolees/Recruiting/Fun/Families!
        • August 26, Sat – Sunapee Cruise – Fun event for Members. Payment due at August meeting. Let Cmdt or Adj Westover know if interested.
        • Sept 1-4 – Hopkinton Fair – discussed in depth and decided not to do it.
        • Sept 9 (Sat)– Kiwanis Club Car Show @ NHTI, Concord (free booth)
        • OR Sept 9 – Danbury Old Home Day – Tabled for more info.
        • Sept 28 – Oct 1 (Thurs-Sun) Deerfield Fair – Cmdt can do all days except Oct 1st; Westover will cover Oct 1st. Discussed dunk tank option – too cold, not enough volunteers.  Motion made to have a tent space (but no dunk tank) for 4 days at a cost of approximately $350 by Kiernan, seconded by LaClair; there was no further discussion; motion passed
        • TBD – Uno’s Pizza Fund raising: not discussed.
      2. Other Events and Activities
        • Bowling – Boutwell’s Bowling Center, Concord – a fall date to be determined.
        • Recruiting Dinner at locations TBD, outside Concord area. Cmdt will search.
        • Attend future Poolee Meetings, Thursdays at 5:00 PM, Marine Recruiting Office, Loudon Rd, Concord – All are welcome to attend and share your knowledge. New Recruiter in Sep – will contact us with next poolee event.
      3. M-1 Fundraiser Committee’s Status Report – AR-15A2 rifle to be raffled off instead. Lindsley reported that the upper receiver is built, lower pending; will check with different printer for tickets; all set for sales at Concord Gun Show and Shriners.
  • Unfinished Business

Detachment Shirts: were paid for by the Det. Members to reimburse Det for the shirts they ordered. Costs are: S-XL $31.50, XXL $33.75, 3X-4X $36.25. Two shirts were handed out.  Need to pay the vendor for three shirts.

Fundraiser items to sell at events – U.S. Flag lapel pins. Cmdt paid for pins out of pocket at about $150. Would like to use the reimbursement towards his Life Membership dues of $400 along with a ~$300 check that the Dept of NH is reimbursing him for Memorial Day expenses. The detachment will profit by ~$50 – Discussed and agreed upon by the membership.

Color Guard Training – Will try to have one practice prior to July 22nd

Sam’s Club Car Show Fund Raising – Cmdt Dumont was asked to provide additional details. Too late for this year, but would like to do one next year.

  • New Business

Granite State Detachment has purchased a table to participate in a gun and knife show at Becktash Shriners in Concord on August 26, 2017. They want to keep their reservation, though they didn’t ask our permission and then follow the National Bylaws from then on. After a lengthy discussion, and assurance from the Dept Cmdt that this issue will be addressed in a Dept Bylaw change, Sr Vice Cmdt Standafer made a motion to allow it this one time, but have to ask in the future.  The motion was seconded by Mark Lindsley; there was no further discussion; Cmdt called for a show of hands vote: 11 in favor, 2 opposed, 2 did not vote – motion passed.

Bow Rotary is applying for a grant to make Old Town Hall handicap accessible (entry way and bathroom). They’re asking for a letter of support and labor. Adj Westover explained the request.  Motion made to provide a letter of support and offer labor of those interested by Kiernan, seconded by Standafer; there was no discussion; motion passed

NH Gold Star Families Monument, State Veterans Cemetery donation request. The email regarding donations towards their ~$50,000 monument was read and discussed.  Motion made to donate $250 to the NH Gold Star Families Monument by Lindsley, seconded by Standafer; discussion by some that the amount was too much;  Lindsley and Standafer amended their motion to $100, motion failed.  After more discussion and debate, Standafer made a motion to donate $250 to the NH Gold Star Families Monument, seconded by LaClair; there was no further discussion; motion passed.

Reimbursement of Chaplain’s expenses of $102.68 for various cards, postage, and Concord Market Days expenses. Lindsley made a motion to reimburse Chaplain Harnish $102.68, seconded by Joe Shea; there was no discussion; motion passed.

Cmdt briefed that George Noel will no longer be able to provide his trailer for the Iwo Jima float. Cmdt Dumont purchased a used trailer out of pocket and will donate it to the detachment, but it needs repairs.  He was given a quote of $700.  Members present would prefer to repair it “in house” as there a Members with welding experience or married to a master welder.  Tabled to next meeting.

Reimbursement of Liz Shaw’s Concord Market Days expenses of $14.98. Standafer made a motion to reimburse Liz Shaw $15, seconded by Bill Shaw; there was no discussion; motion passed

  • Good of the League
    1. Awards/Presentations: None, but thanks for Kiernan for the meal and Donna Melanson for dessert.
    2. Carol Delbridge to make next month’s (Aug 3rd) meal, and Kiernan to bring dessert.
  • Announcements
    1. Department Meeting (1100) & Growl (1400) – September 24, 2017 @ American Legion, Concord
  • Closing Ceremony conducted; next meeting August 3, 2017. The meeting closed at 2038.
