Minutes of May 4, 2017 Meeting

1) Opening Ceremony: Acting Sgt/Arms Mark Lindsley opened the meeting at 1902 and opening prayer was given by Chaplain Mike Harnish. There were 10 Detachment Members present.
2) Roll Call of Officers: Sr Vice Mike Standafer absent; Jr Vice Steve Opett and Sgt/Arms Bill Kiernan were excused. All other officers were present.
3) Applications for Membership: None at this time.
4) Minutes from Previous Meeting – 4/6/17 Minutes: Minutes were distributed and reviewed by the membership. Motion made to accept the minutes as presented by Lindsley, duly seconded by Chaplain George Noel; there was no discussion; motion passed unanimously.
5) Correspondence: Notice of a Free Veterans’ Benefit Seminar: Sat May 13th 0800-1200 Am Legion Manchester and we received $200 donation from Glen & Mary Dillon, parents of Gary, now in Ohio (there was no note enclosed).
6) Paymaster Report: Report was distributed and reviewed by the membership. Adj/Paymaster Bryan Westover briefed the report. Motion made to accept the report as presented by Judge Advocate Liz Shaw, duly seconded by Bob Selig; no discussion; motion passed unanimously.
7) Sick and In Distress: Steve Opett’s mother is very ill – Steve is spending time with her in NY. Ray DeCorse is still recovering from surgery.
8) Report of Officers:
a) Installation of Jr Vice Cmdt – Tabled.
b) Quad State Convention and Northeast Conference Report
i) 2017 Quad State Streamer awarded and added to our Det Colors; Det Financial Audit Committees; Recommended that an Eagle Scout Rep for each Det to contact all Troops with our area of operation; present American Flag Certificates to businesses; 2018 Quad in VT at Burke Mtn ski area.
ii) Reimbursement of Cmdt’s Room charges ($73.45) and Registration Fee ($25):
Motion to reimburse Cmdt Dumont $98.45 was made by Joe Shea and seconded by Selig; no discussion; motion passed unanimously.
9) Report of Committees
a) Activity Committee
i) Scheduled and Pending Events: The below items were discussed:
(1) May 18 – 21 – Kiwanis Fair, Everett Arena, Concord – We have a spot reserved for recruiting/information only, no sales. Cmdt will be there 19, 20 & 21; Liz Shaw will take the 18th. Other members are encouraged to assist at the following times:
Thurs, May 11th from 5 – 10pm; Fri, May 12th from 5 – 11pm; Sat, May 13th from
Noon – 11pm; Sun, May 14th from Noon – 6pm. Uniform will be MCL polo shirt and khakis or USMC t-shirt and jeans.
(2) May 20 – Bow Rotary Car Show, CANCELED – conflicts with Kiwanis Fair.
(3) May 13 at 0800 – Place Flags at Blossom Hill Cemetery, Concord. Also need to replace flags at the Court House on Court St. across from the VFW and on South St. at the Marine Monument
(4) May 13 or 20 (Date/Time TBD) – Place Flags at Bow Cemeteries. Meet at Town Pond. Westover will coordinate and will be the only Member needed.
(5) May 29 (Monday) – Concord Memorial Day Parade – Meet at Burlington Coat Factory parking lot, Storrs St at 0830. Parade at 0900. Cmdt will assist Noel with float on the 28th. Color Guard will have practices in prep of the parade.
(6) May 30 (TUESDAY) – Boscawen Veterans Cemetery – Memorial Day Ceremony – Dept of NH MCL is in charge this year. Volunteers meet at 1000. Uniform: White Short Sleeve Shirt, Dress Blue Trousers, Cover & Red Satin Jacket. Ceremony begins at 11:00 AM.
(7) May 29 – Bow Memorial Day Ceremony at Gazebo near Fire Station: Firing Detail. Meet at Old Town Hall at 2:30 PM for practice. Event at 3:30 PM. Uniform: White Short Sleeve Shirt, Dress Blue Trousers, and Cover.
(8) June 17 – Fred Osgood’s funeral, East Cemetery, Concord. His son has requested a rifle detail. Not enough Dillon Members available to cover; Cmdt Dumont will contact the Dept of NH Cmdt for assistance.
(9) June 22 – 24 – Concord Market Days, downtown Concord – Main Street: Our space has been reserved – location to be determined. Unknown if we will be permitted to have a dunk tank. We will have shirts for sale, from a Veteran owned business – there are no upfront costs and we get 15-25% of the sales. Members were reminded that it will take manpower to make this successful.
(10) July 4 – Andover Parade – this year’s focus is on WWII and wars since. We will provide a float, Detachment Color Guard, and Cmdt is working on getting old military jeeps for other Members to ride in. Poolees not able to attend.
(11) July 8 – Newbury Old Home Day (parade) – Not discussed.
(12) July 22 – Pittsfield Old Home Day (parade and booth) – Not discussed.
(13) August 12 – Loudon Old Home Day (parade & booth) – Not discussed.
(14) August 19 – Poolee Family Event
We need to pick a park. Westover will check Elm Brook Park, Liz Shaw will check others. We are going to invite the Poolees and their families. This is the only date this summer that we can meet with Poolees. We would plan a nice big event with pie eating contest and other fun games like the USMC favorite, Dizzy Izzy. Cmdt Dumont has personally donated $250 for this event.
(15) August 26 – Sunapee Cruise – so far, Dumont, Selig, Harnish & Westover plan to attend.
(16) Sept 1-4 – Hopkinton Fair – Free only for one year – Est Cost is $525.00. This will be on hold, pending the fundraising from Market Days.
(17) Sept 9 – Kiwanis Club Car Show @ NHTI, Concord (booth)
(18) Sept 9 – Danbury Old Home Days – Not discussed.
(19) Sept 28 – Oct 1- Deerfield Fair: Cmdt is coordinating with other Detachment to split the time. Cmdt can do all days except Oct 1st, has a prior commitment. Westover will cover Oct 1st. Cmdt will check for any costs.
(20) TBD – Uno’s Pizza Fund raising. Cmdt will check on available dates.
ii) Other Events and Activities
(1) Bowling – Boutwell’s Bowling Center, Concord
1:00 PM on a Saturday in June, date to be determined.
(2) Recruiting Dinner at locations TBD, outside Concord area – Cmdt will check for a location in the Salisbury area.
(3) Lake Sunapee Dinner Cruise on Saturday, Aug 26th. Good family event!
$37.00 per person, we have 30 spots to fill between the MCL and Car Club. Contact Cmdt Dumont if you’re interested. (Discussed above)
(4) Attend future Poolee Meetings, Thursdays at 5:00 PM, Marine Recruiting Office, Loudon Rd, Concord. Not Discussed.
b) M-1 Fundraiser Committee’s Report – M-1 Fundraiser: Lindsley displayed an AR-15A2, which he can build for $450-$550 (M-1 would be ~$830). Discussion included the need to sell tickets at gun shows – If we get a table at the Everett Arena, it would cost $40, and other Detachments would need to be informed not to attend; timeframe; profit; ticket costs -~$80. In order for the Detachment to make a decision on this topic, Westover made a motion to spend up to $600 on the parts of the AR-15A2, tickets, and Everett Arena fee. Duly seconded by Lindlsey; there was further no discussion; motion passed by a hand count of 6 in favor, 1 opposed, and 2 abstained.

10) Unfinished Business
a) Detachment Shirts: were paid for by the Det. Members to reimburse Det for the shirts they ordered. Costs are: S-XL $31.50, XXL $33.75, 3X-4X $36.25. Shirts will be available for the Kiwanis Fair.
b) Fundraiser items to sell at events – U.S. Flag lapel pins. Not discussed.
c) Color Guard Training – May 4th before meeting; Thursdays at 6:30 pm @ Bow Old Town Hall on May 11th and May 25th. Members interested so far are: Dumont, Standafer, Opett, Lindsley, Westover, and Reggie LaClair. All others are welcome to participate.
d) New Email List – Cmdt briefed that the automated email list is not working. A standard group e-mail list will be used.
e) Tri-fold pamphlets – Pamphlets are ordered and will be available for the Kiwanis Fair and future recruiting events.
11) New Business
a) Request for contribution to the Post 31’s Children’s Fishing Derby. No interest from Members to support this event.
12) Good of the League
a) Awards/Presentations: Joe Shea was awarded his Ceremonial Guard Ribbon for past participation in parades and ceremonies.
b) Cmdt Dumont volunteered to make next month’s (June 1st) meal, and Lindsley offered to bring dessert.
13) Announcements
a) Department Meeting (1100) & Growl (1400) – June 11, 2017 @ American Legion, Concord
14) Closing Ceremony was conducted and the next meeting is scheduled for May 4, 2017. The meeting closed at 2025.
