Minutes of April 6, 2017 Meeting

  • Opening Ceremony: Sgt/Arms Bill Kiernan opened the meeting at 1902 and opening prayer was given by Chaplain Mike Harnish. There were 10 Detachment Members present.
  • Roll Call of Officers: Jr Vice Steve Opett was excused. All other officers were present.
  • Applications for Membership: Cmdt Cody Dumont and Sr Vice Mike Standafer are working on potential Members.
  • Minutes from Previous Meeting – 3/2/17 Minutes: Minutes were distributed and reviewed by the membership. Motion made to accept the minutes as presented by Kiernan, duly seconded by Judge Advocate Liz Shaw; there was no discussion; motion passed
  • Correspondence: A thank you note from Jack & Louise Hachez was read.
  • Paymaster Report: Report was distributed and reviewed by the membership. Adj/Paymaster Bryan Westover briefed the report.  Motion made to accept the report as presented by Mark Lindsley, duly seconded by Kiernan; discussion confirmed that we are a tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization; motion passed  Cmdt Dumont announced that he has received another anonymous $100 donation for Poolee functions.
  • Sick and In Distress: Ray DeCorse had surgery, is recovering, wishes us well and expects to be at next month’s meeting. Roland McLaren’s mobility is currently limited, but we hope to see him soon.  Chaplain Mike Harnish will send them cards.
  • Report of Officers: Sr Vice Mike Standafer and Judge Advocate Liz Shaw were duly installed by Cmdt Dumont.

    • Scheduled and Pending Events: The below items were discussed:
        • May 11 – 14 – Kiwanis Fair, Everett Arena, Concord – We have a spot reserved for recruiting/information only, no sales. Cmdt will be there all days.  Other members are encouraged to assist at the following times:  Thurs, May 11th from 5 – 10pm; Fri, May 12th from 5 – 11pm; Sat, May 13th from Noon – 11pm; Sun, May 14th from Noon – 6pm.  Uniform will be MCL polo shirt and khakis or USMC t-shirt and jeans.
          • May 20 – Bow Rotary Car Show, 8am – 2pm, 503 South St, Bow – confirmed for a recruiting and sales booth. Cmdt will be there, other members are encouraged to attend. Uniform will be MCL polo shirt and khakis or USMC t-shirt and jeans.
          • June 22 – 24 – Concord Market Days, downtown Concord – Main Street: Cmdt briefed associated costs and potential for recruitment and fundraising. Intent is to have a “Dunk a Marine” to raise money – Dunk Tank.  Discussion included water need, shirts and pins for sale, weather, and Members willing to assist. Motion by Lindsley to have a booth for the 3 days for $250 and a dunk tank for one day at $185, with the option for additional days if it makes money, seconded by Kiernan; discussion confirmed that shirts could be sold with no upfront costs; motion passed  Members were reminded that it will take manpower to make this successful.
          • July 4 – Andover Parade – this year’s focus is on WWII and wars since. We will provide a float, Detachment Color Guard, and hopefully poolees. Color guard training will be at 1000 this Sunday at the Old Town Hall.

    1. Other Events and Activities
      • Bowling – Boutwell’s Bowling Center, Concord. 1:00 PM on third Saturdays of the month.  Will try in May for first event.
    • Recruiting Dinner at locations TBD, outside Concord area – Not discussed.
    • Lake Sunapee Dinner Cruise on Saturday, Aug 26th. Good family event! $37.00 per person, we have 30 spots to fill between the MCL and Car Club.  Contact Cmdt Dumont if you’re interested.
    • Attend future Poolee Meetings, Thursdays at 5:00 PM, Marine Recruiting Office, Loudon Rd, Concord. MCL Members are invited to attend meetings.
    • Fundraiser items to sell at events – U.S. Flag lapel pins discussed. Estimated Price $1.50 per pin in quantity of 100. Could charge up to $5.00 per pin.  Cmdt volunteered to pay to the pins upfront out of his pocket, if needed.  Motion by Kiernan that the Detachment purchase 100 pins at $150, seconded by Standafer; there was a brief discussion regarding the Granite State Det having a booth at the Concord Gun Show without asking us first; motion passed.
    • Detachment collared Polo/Golf Shirts – Cmdt Dumont briefed the made in America shirts from Manchester company, Leatherneck for Life. Costs are: S-XL $31.50, XXL   $33.75, 3X-4X $36.25. Contact Cmdt Dumont to order.
    • Unfinished Business
    • M-1 Fundraiser: Lindsley briefed costs for the rifle (~$830) and raffle tickets ($80), he would like to wait for a lower rifle cost. Discussion included the need to sell tickets at gun shows; timeframe; profit; gun broker/auction website. A committee was formed: Kiernan, Standafer, and Lindsley – they will get together and report back at next meeting.
    • Department Dues Increase: The Dept voted to not increase their dues but are seeking donations to help support the Department’s work. There was a consensus that the Det will review the previous month’s fundraising efforts and decide how much of any profits should be donated to the Department of NH.
    • Color Guard Training – April 9th at 10 am @ Bow Old Town Hall – Members interested so far are: Dumont, Standafer, Opett, Lindsley, Westover, and Reggie LaClair. All others are welcome to participate.
    • New Email List – Cmdt asked if there was anyone who was not receiving the emails. He will send out a test e-mail during the weekend. Please acknowledge receipt or if no email is received by the following week, please inform him.
    • Life Member Dues Rates were provided, as requested at last month’s meeting. They are based on age: <36=$500; 36-50=$400; 51-64=$300; 65+=$200.
    • New Business
    • Det Recruiting/Information Tri-fold pamphlets: we are currently out of stock and we have upcoming recruiting events. They are only handed out to individuals who show interest in joining the League.  Cmdt provided the costs and Standafer made a motion to purchase 100 pamphlets at $83.24, seconded by Kiernan; discussion consisted on return on investment and confirmed that they have helped get new members; motion passed.
    • Good of the League
      1. Cmdt thanked all that helped with the poolee function cookout on March 18th. It was well received by the poolees, the recruiters and our Members; and it came in under budget. We will look to do something again in 2-3 months.
      2. Cmdt and Members thanked Chaplain Harnish for his letters of his support that he personally sent to all Det Members.
      3. Jack Hachez donated some of his uniform items: a total of $40 was collected so far from Members for some of those items. Thank you Jack!  We’re all thinking about you.
      4. Awards/Presentations: Lindsley was awarded his Ceremonial Guard Ribbon for past participation in parades and ceremonies.
      5. Liz Shaw volunteered to make next month’s (May 4th) meal, and Kiernan offered to bring dessert.
    • Announcements
      1. Granite State Spring Social – April 9, 2017, VFW Sweeney Post Manchester NH
      2. Quad State Convention and Northeast Conference (& Grand Growl) – April 21-23, 2017 @ Newport, RI. Those interested in carpooling can contact the Cmdt.
      3. BCMC Roadside Cleanup – Sat. April 22nd at 0800 at the Old Town Hall, Bow
      4. Boscawen Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony – MCL in charge this year. Monday, May 29th at 9am. Please attend and assist/volunteer if able.
      5. Other Memorial Day Events: Cemetery flag placements in Concord and Bow, Concord parade and Bow’s ceremony will be discussed at the May 4th Cmdt Dumont and Opett are working on a trailer to carry our Iwo Jima float for parades.
      6. Department Meeting (1100) & Growl (1400) – June 11, 2017 @ American Legion, Concord
    • Closing Ceremony was conducted and the next meeting is scheduled for May 4, 2017. The meeting closed at 2035.
