Minutes of March 2, 2017 Meeting

  • Opening Ceremony: Acting Sgt/Arms Bill Kiernan opened the meeting at 1905 and opening prayer was given by Chaplain Mike Harnish. There were 14 Detachment Members present.
  • Roll Call of Officers: Sr Vice (Temporary) Mark Lindsley and Sgt at Arms Kevin Miller were excused. All other officers were present.
  • Applications for Membership: Cmdt Cody Dumont is working on potential Members.
  • Minutes from Previous Meeting – 2/2/17 Minutes: Minutes were distributed and reviewed by the membership. Motion made to accept the minutes as presented by Liz Shaw, duly seconded by Jr Vice Steve Opett; no discussion; motion passed
  • Correspondence: A thank you note from Fred Osgood’s family was read.
  • Paymaster Report: Report was distributed and reviewed by the membership. Adj/Paymaster Bryan Westover gave a detailed explanation, motion by Opett to accept the Paymaster’s Report as presented, second by Bob Selig.  Discussion consisted of what a “poolee” is – a recruit awaiting departure to boot camp; motion passed
  • Sick and In Distress: Cmdt announced that Lindsley is sick/has flu. John Finck briefed the Det on Joe Shea’s wife’s, Nancy, grave medical condition and that Joe asked that we do not send cards or flowers – Cmdt stated that Joe’s desires will be respected but asked Finck to keep him informed of any changes and to inform Joe that he’s in our thoughts and we are here to offer any assistance that he may desire.
  • Report of Officers: Cmdt displayed the shadow box that he and Steve Opett made. It will be presented to Jack Hachez and the gift (Marine Wife coin) to Jack’s wife. A card was distributed and signed by Members, and kudos were given to the Cmdt and Opett on their wonderful job.
  • Report of Committees
    1. Activity Committee
      1. Proposed Event Dates: The below items were discussed:
        • Mar 3– Bow High School Basketball Game – Giving MVP awards: Event was cancelled – Cmdt did not hear back from the Coach with student names.
        • May 20 – Bow Rotary Car Show (recruiting and fundraiser): Westover tasked to make contact with Rotary to allow a booth again this year. Cmdt is willing to front the funds needed to purchase US Flag lapel pins to be used as fund raising until enough are sold to cover the initial purchase. There was a consensus of the Membership to sell lapel pins at upcoming events.
        • June 22 – 24 – Concord Market Days: Cmdt working on getting a booth.
        • July 4 – Andover Parade – this year’s focus is on WWII and wars since (float, color guard, poolees (?)): Would like to have a Det Color Guard in the parade – Dumont, Opett and Westover volunteered – need one more Member.
        • July 8 – Newbury Old Home Day (parade): Cmdt to coordinate/take action.
        • July 22 – Pittsfield Old Home Day (parade and booth): Cmdt to coordinate/take action.
        • Sept 1-4 – Hopkinton Fair: Recruiting and fundraising booth. Must be manned all 4 days from 0700 to 2100. Members asked to take shifts.
        • Sept 9 – Kiwanis Club Car Show at NHTI Concord (recruiting and fundraiser booth): Cmdt to coordinate/take action.
        • Kiwanis Fair in Concord? Cmdt to look into allowing a booth or dunk tank. Dunk tank could possibly be used at Hopkinton Fair as well.  Westover to research rental costs.
        • UNO’s fund raising event was discussed. Coupons are handed out for a specific day and a percentage of the meal cost of those that use the coupons are given to the Detachment. Cmdt will do more research.
      2. Other Things talked about
        • Bowling at Boutwell’s Bowling Center in Concord: After some discussion, Saturday afternoons would be best. Cmdt will look at reserving lanes for 1:00 PM on the third Saturday of the month. This would be a family and friends event and we may even try to meet for breakfast prior to bowling.
        • Recruiting Dinner at restaurant near Liz Shaw’s House: Liz briefed that the intended restaurant was not interested. Cmdt asked Members to look for a place outside the immediate Concord area to try to get a presence in the outskirts of our area of responsibility.
        • Marines Night Post 31, Penacook (Date TBD): Cmdt is working with VFW Staff for the mailing address of their members in order to send invitations.
        • Lake Sunapee Dinner Cruise (Date TBD): Cmdt will take for action for a family and friends event.
  • Farewell Dinner Planning for Poolees going to Boot Camp Saturday March 18

Poolee Function will at the National Guard HQ (near the airport) in Concord at 1:00 PM. Members volunteering asked to arrive at 1230 to set up grill, food, drinks, etc. Approximately 50 poolees from Concord North will be present.  Motion by Opett to expend up to $200 (in addition to the $100 already donated) to purchase food – hot dogs, burgers, buns, etc., second by Kiernan; discussed that we already have drinks leftover from last event; enter at the airport side gate; motion passed unanimously. Cmdt will send out an email with more information

  1. Attend future Poolee Meetings at Joint Recruiting Office on Loudon Rd, Concord
    • Thursdays at 5:00 PM (1700) – Dillon Det Members are invited to attend meetings meet and talk with poolees.
  • Unfinished Business
    1. Detachment Shirts: Cmdt expects to have a golf shirt as an example at next month’s meeting.
    2. Fundraiser items to sell at events: Discussed lapel pins earlier.
    3. Quad State Convention Program Ad: Membership decided to have the half-page ad be dedicated to Det Members that have died in 2016. Westover to take for action.
    4. M-1 Fundraiser: Westover read Lindsley’s email on details: $830 for M-1; $75 for 300 numbered raffle tickets; sell at $10 each from spring 2017 to fall 2018. Profit would be ~$2,000. There was a lengthy discussion on concerns and questions: who would pay for rifle; how and where to sell tickets; long selling time frame; change to a hunting rifle; have 2nd and 3rd place prizes – pistol or cash as examples. Cmdt will allow this item to be tabled for just one more month – April’s meeting will have to decide this to be a go or no go.
    5. Ceremonial Ribbon: Westover read the requirements and briefed the research that he and Joe Shea found on eligible Members (Lindsley, Shea, Finck, Selig, and Westover) and that others may be entitled, but they would need to provide information on qualified events. Detachment’s historical/photo album may be of help, but does not include every event Detachment Members participated in.  Cmdt presented Ceremonial Ribbons to Finck, Selig and Westover.  Shea’s and Lindsley’s will be presented at a future meeting when in attendance.  Adjutant will start recording qualified events and participating Members for future awards.
    6. Department Dues Increase:–Dept tabled this item until its March 26th meeting.
  • New Business
    1. Life Membership Costs: Members asked for information on the cost for Life Membership – Adj/Paymaster Westover to provide info at the next meeting.
    2. Donna Melanson has MCL uniform items that belonged to deceased Member Robert Gallagher (Red Satin Jacket, 2 shirts, trousers, and shoes) that she’d like to sell. After some discussion, Kiernan made a motion that the Det purchase the 5 items at $10 each ($50) and to sell them to new or existing Members at that cost, second by Opett.  There was no discussion; motion passed  Cmdt volunteered to store the uniform items until they are sold.
  • Good of the League
    1. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to Robert Selig (left) for duties as Judge Advocate and Bill Kiernan (center) for duties as Sergeant at Arms), by Commandant Cody Dumont (right).
    2. Cmdt announced an automated e-mailing system that will send an e-mail to all Members. He will send out a test e-mail on March 4th.  Members are asked to inform Cmdt Dumont if they do not receive an e-mail by March 5th.
    3. Kiernan volunteered to prepare next month’s meal and Liz Shaw will bring dessert.
    4. Donna Melanson and Carol McLaren were thanked for providing tonight’s meal and for donating $36 of funds collected.
    5. Cmdt announced and thanked Mike Standafer for accepting to fill the vacant Sr Vice Cmdt position.
  • Announcements
    1. Clarence Parker (former Member) funeral 1430 March 10, 2017 at Boscawen Veterans Cemetery: Members are invited to attend and the Chaplain will send a card to the family. Adjutant to provide the Chaplain with names and address.
    2. Department Meeting (1100) & Growl (1400) – Mar 26, 2017 @ American Legion, Concord (Elections for Dept Officers & MODD Pack Officers): Cmdt encouraged ALL Members to attend, especially if they want a say in Dept dues and it being held nearby.
    3. Boscawen Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony – MCL in charge this year, Monday, May 29th. Volunteers needed for Color Guard and other details.
    4. Quad State Convention and Northeast Conference (& Grand Growl) – April 21-23, 2017 @ Newport, RI
    5. Granite State Spring Social – April 9, 2017, VFW Sweeney Post Manchester NH, and information of other events were provided in handouts on each table.
  • Closing Ceremony was conducted and the next meeting is scheduled for April 6, 2017. The meeting closed at 2035.
